Volvo: Chroma Road
A groundbreaking innovation in asphalt technology that revolutionizes the battle against global warming.
Earth is now about 1.1 degrees Celsius warmer than it was in the late 1800s, with the last decade being the warmest on record.
One of the major contributors to global warming is asphalt, which covers 32.3 million square kilometers of our planet, absorbing and trapping heat in the atmosphere.
ChromaRoad is a color-changing asphalt, infused with thermochromic pigments that turn light blue when exposed to heat, and return to black when cooled down.
Light blue is one of the least heat-absorbing colors. Having roads in this color can help reducing global warming while ensuring everyone's safety, by not reflecting extreme light into drivers and pedestrians.
However, traditional asphalt's heat-absorbing quality is still necessary for melting snow, and keeping roads visible and safe during snowstorms in regions that experience both extreme heat and extreme cold.
